We chanced upon Wooden Horse one lazy Sunday while looking for a place to have dinner in Alabang. We were feeling adventurous and decided to give this wild west- themed place a go. It was practically empty when we walked in (as it was only about 5:30) and a friendly waiter named Allan immediately jumped up, greeted and seated us. Upon closer inspection of the restaurant’s interiors, I was happy to see that much thought was put into what was on the walls, the tables and chairs and even the silverware. There was country music playing on the sound system, and the waiters all had proper cowboy hats on. I had high hopes as it’s nice to see non-chain theme restaurants go full force.

Our oh-so-competent waiter gave us suggestions about what to order and he sounded like he actually knew what he was talking about. . Turns out, he’s been at The Wooden Horse since it opened 2 years ago. After a thorough menu-perusal, I noticed some items that stood out. Noticing my puzzled expression, Allan quickly informed me that the chef and owner is Japanese. Surprise, surprise! Given the new information, I ended up ordering a hamburger steak and pasta on a sizzling plate, which turned out to be unimpressive. The steaks my companions ordered however, were pretty good.

Since we ate quite early, we were ready to leave at around 7. By this time, the restaurant had filled up and a singer came out, in costume, and proceeded to belt out country western standards. The chef came out to meet us as well, which I thought was a nice touch. All in all, my dinner companions and I very much enjoyed our time at Wooden Horse. The food was pretty good but what stood out more was the excellent service and the fact that they totally owned their theme, from silverware all the way to background music.  Sticking to a theme with conviction and having fantastic service definitely makes for a more enjoyable (and memorable!) experience.

Wooden Horse is located on the first floor of  The Molito Lifestyle Centeron Madrigal Avenue in Alabang. Check them out when you have a hankering for a good piece of meat and are looking for something out of the ordinary.
